One of the Old Took’s many descendants
A great-grandson of Gerontius, the Old Took, Adelard's father wasFlambard Took. He had five children of his own, including Reginardand Everard. Like most of the Took clan, Adelard had a heroic name:in his case, Adelard comes from a Teutonic word meaning 'resolute'or 'courageous'.
Adelard was a regular visitor to Bag End, and was apparently wellknown for taking Bilbo's umbrellas. After the Farewell Party,Adelard was left the gift of an umbrella of his own. He lived onthrough the War of the Ring, and died in the second year of theFourth Age, at the age of ninety-five.
